Pathanamthitta:
A couple from central Kerala has been arrested by police for allegedly subjecting two individuals to severe torture, including stapling their bodies and using pepper spray, after luring them to their residence, officials reported on Sunday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Jayesh and his wife Reshmi, who reside in Charalakunnu near Koipuram.
Police reports indicate that the couple tortured a young man from Neelamperoor in Alappuzha on September 1 and another individual from Ranni in Pathanamthitta on September 5.
According to the FIR filed at Koipuram police station, the first victim, a 19-year-old from Neelamperoor, was collected by Jayesh on his motorcycle from Maramon around 12:30 pm on September 1 and taken to the couple's home. The youth was familiar with the couple and had frequent interactions with them through social media.
At their residence, the victim was allegedly threatened with death and coerced into performing sexual acts with Reshmi while Jayesh recorded the incident. He was "bound, threatened with a dagger, struck with an iron rod, beaten with a cycle chain, and assaulted with a cutting plier," as stated in the FIR.
The couple allegedly confiscated his two mobile phones, applied pepper spray to his genitals, took Rs 19,000 from his wallet, and warned him against revealing the incident before leaving him at an autorickshaw stand.
The second victim, who had previously been a colleague of Jayesh at a private company, was invited to the couple's residence on Onam day.
He was allegedly beaten with an iron rod, had staples inserted at 23 locations on his body—including his genitals—and was robbed of money and his mobile phone before being abandoned in an isolated area.
Police learned of the incidents after one victim was hospitalized with injuries.
Initially, he provided a false account, claiming he was attacked by unknown persons. "However, when reassured, he disclosed that Jayesh and Reshmi were responsible for the torture," stated an officer from Aranmula police station.
A case was first registered at Aranmula police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 296(b), 351(3), 126(2), 115(2), 118(1), 118(2), 109(1), 309(4), and 3(5). One case has since been transferred to Koipuram police station, and both cases will now be investigated together.
The couple, arrested on Friday, appeared in court and were remanded to judicial custody.
Police indicated they will undergo further questioning to determine their motive. "Whether additional victims were targeted remains to be investigated. One victim claimed they were assaulted as part of a black magic ritual, but this requires verification," added an officer.
