In a historic appointment, 1994-batch IPS officer Tadasha Mishra has become the first woman to lead Jharkhand's police force since the state's formation 25 years ago. Taking charge as acting DGP, Mishra brings extensive experience from various leadership positions and has outlined a vision focusing on improved investigations, accountability, and citizen-friendly policing practices. This landmark achievement follows the voluntary retirement of former DGP Anurag Gupta amid complex administrative developments regarding the position.

1994 Batch IPS Officer Tadasha Mishra Is 1st Woman To Head Jharkhand Police

Tadasha Mishra has made history by becoming the first female Director General of Police in Jharkhand since the state's formation 25 years ago.

The 1994-batch IPS officer officially took charge as the acting DGP at Ranchi police headquarters on Friday, followed by a courtesy meeting with Chief Minister Hemant Soren at his Kanke residence.

Prior to this landmark appointment, Mishra served as Special Secretary in the Home, Prisons and Disaster Management Department. An Odisha native, her distinguished career in Jharkhand includes various leadership roles such as ADG, IG, and Superintendent of Police in Giridih and Bokaro districts, as well as City SP of Ranchi.

After assuming charge, Mishra shared her vision with the media, highlighting priorities that include enhancing investigation quality, increasing accountability, and promoting citizen-friendly policing practices.

"We will work diligently to implement the state government's policing vision," Mishra stated. "Effective policing fundamentally depends on investigation quality. We will focus on strengthening investigations and ensuring an efficient, prompt and robust prosecution system that delivers timely justice."

Mishra also urged officers, particularly those at lower levels, to treat citizens respectfully and maintain the police force's people-friendly image.

Her historic appointment follows the voluntary retirement of former DGP Anurag Gupta, whose request was approved by the state government. Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer, retired on November 5 after serving as acting DGP since July 2024. His tenure saw a brief removal by the Election Commission during Assembly elections before being reinstated after the electoral process.

Earlier in February 2025, the Jharkhand government had established new rules for DGP appointments, under which Gupta received a regular two-year term. However, this appointment faced objections from both the Centre and the UPSC. Speculation about his departure intensified after he was relieved from his additional role as ACB DG in September.
