Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the year-long commemoration of India's National Song "Vande Mataram" at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Friday.

During the ceremony, PM Modi released a Commemorative Stamp and Coin marking this significant milestone. He also launched a dedicated portal celebrating the 150th anniversary of 'Vande Mataram'.

The event featured a mass singing of the complete version of "Vande Mataram" across various public places nationwide, with citizens from all segments of society participating simultaneously with the main program. The Prime Minister personally joined the mass singing at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

The ceremony was attended by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Saxena, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

This inauguration marks the beginning of nationwide commemorations scheduled to run from November 7, 2025, to November 7, 2026, celebrating 150 years of the iconic composition that inspired India's freedom movement and continues to symbolize national unity and pride.

According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of "Vande Mataram." Bankimchandra Chatterji composed the national song on Akshaya Navami, which fell on November 7, 1875. The song first appeared in the literary journal Bangadarshan as part of his novel Anandamath.

The composition, which portrays the Motherland as an embodiment of strength, prosperity, and divinity, expressed India's awakening spirit of unity and self-respect. It quickly evolved into an enduring symbol of national devotion.

On October 1, the Union Cabinet approved nationwide celebrations for the 150th anniversary of 'Vande Mataram' to create a meaningful movement connecting citizens, especially youth and students, with the song's original revolutionary spirit. The celebrations aim to honor this timeless message and ensure its legacy continues in future generations.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has developed a comprehensive plan for nationwide celebrations marking two significant cultural milestones: the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and the 150th birth anniversary of tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
