A 27-year-old resident of Tokmal Tanda village in Maharashtra has tragically taken his own life following relentless online harassment over a controversial video that went viral on social media.
The incident occurred in Jalna district where the young man, identified as Mahesh Ade, ended his life by jumping into a village well on Wednesday, November 5, according to police reports released on Thursday.
Authorities have filed charges against seven individuals for criminal intimidation and abetting suicide following this tragic incident in the central Maharashtra district.
Police investigations revealed that the controversy began when a video circulated online showing Ade and a friend urinating near a blue board displaying "Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Railway Station." The act, reportedly performed under alcohol influence, triggered significant outrage across social media platforms.
Following the video's circulation, numerous individuals began harassing and threatening both men online and through phone calls. Despite Ade and his friend posting an apologetic video in an attempt to diffuse the situation, the harassment continued unabated.
Unable to withstand the persistent humiliation and pressure, Ade allegedly took the drastic decision to end his life, as per police statements.
Based on a formal complaint from the deceased's uncle, law enforcement has registered a case against seven persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to criminal intimidation and suicide abetment.
