New Delhi:

The Indian Navy will soon strengthen its hydrographic capabilities with the addition of Ikshak, the third vessel in the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class and the first to be stationed at the Southern Naval Command, according to Wednesday's Ministry of Defence announcement.

As per the MoD release, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi will preside over the formal commissioning ceremony at Naval Base, Kochi, scheduled for November 6, 2025.

Manufactured by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd in Kolkata, Ikshak represents a significant achievement in India's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

The MoD highlighted that "the vessel comprises over 80 percent indigenous components, demonstrating the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and productive collaboration between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)."

They further noted, "The Sanskrit name 'Ikshak', meaning 'Guide', perfectly characterizes the vessel's role as a beacon of accuracy and intention."

Designed for comprehensive coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports, harbors, and navigational channels, this vessel will generate crucial data for maritime navigation safety, thereby reinforcing India's maritime security infrastructure.

Ikshak features cutting-edge hydrographic and oceanographic technology, including high-resolution multi-beam echo sounders, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs), bringing unparalleled versatility to the Navy's hydrographic fleet.

The vessel also incorporates a helicopter deck, expanding its operational range and enabling multi-domain missions.

The commissioning of Ikshak represents a crucial advancement in the Indian Navy's ongoing development of its survey and mapping capabilities.

Embodying indigenous strength, technical excellence, and maritime stewardship, Ikshak stands ready to serve the nation - mapping unexplored waters and protecting India's extensive maritime boundaries.
