New Delhi:
Vote counting is currently in progress for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) elections, which took place on Tuesday amid enthusiastic participation and vibrant campaigning across campus.
According to the JNUSU Election Committee, results are anticipated to be announced on November 6.
This year's polls registered a 67 per cent voter turnout, showing a slight decrease from 70 per cent in the previous election. The 2023-24 polls had witnessed 73 per cent voting, the highest participation rate in the past decade.
Throughout Tuesday, the JNU campus was energized with drums, chants, and campaign songs as students lined up at polling stations to select the new central panel and school councillors. Voting began at 9 am and continued until 5:30 pm, with a break between 1 pm and 2:30 pm.
A total of 9,043 students were eligible to participate in electing four central positions—president, vice-president, general secretary, and joint secretary—along with 42 councillor positions across various schools.
The competition, often viewed as reflecting broader ideological conflicts, primarily features Left Unity—a coalition comprising the All India Students' Association (AISA), Students' Federation of India (SFI), and Democratic Students' Federation (DSF)—against the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The Left alliance has nominated Aditi Mishra for president, Kizhakoot Gopika Babu for vice-president, Sunil Yadav for general secretary, and Danish Ali for joint secretary. The ABVP's candidates include Vikas Patel, Tanya Kumari, Rajeshwar Kant Dubey, and Anuj for the four central positions.
While the ABVP has centered its campaign on themes of 'performance and nationalism,' the Left coalition has emphasized 'inclusion, accessibility, and student welfare.'
"The Left Unity will win all four central panel seats," former JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh told PTI while campaigning outside a polling station.
Although turnout was moderate in the morning, queues lengthened in the afternoon as students, many voting for the first time, arrived to cast their ballots.
Last year, AISA's Nitish Kumar secured the president's position, while ABVP's Vaibhav Meena won the joint secretary role, marking the right-wing organization's return to the union after a decade.
The counting process began late Tuesday night and continues on Wednesday, with final results to be announced on November 6.
