A government school teacher in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district has been suspended after allegedly beating 31 students with a bamboo stick because they failed to touch her feet following morning prayers.
The teacher has been identified as Sukanti Kar.
"Following the morning prayer assembly, all students proceeded to their respective classrooms. Allegedly, several students from classes 6, 7, and 8 were interrogated about why they had not touched her feet after the prayer," explained Block Education Officer Biplab Kar.
"Those students who did not touch her feet were severely beaten by the accused teacher using a bamboo stick," the officer further stated.
Upon learning of the incident, the students' parents arrived at the school demanding strict disciplinary action against the teacher.
The injured students were subsequently transported to Betnoti Hospital to receive medical treatment.
"After being informed by headmaster Purnachandra Ojha, we promptly visited the school accompanied by Cluster resource center coordinator Debashish Sahu and a school management committee member to investigate the incident. We met with the injured students and documented their statements," the block officer reported.
