A couple from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested after orchestrating an insurance fraud scheme. They falsely claimed Rs 25 lakh in insurance benefits by fabricating the husband's death certificate. Lucknow Police confirmed on Wednesday that Ravi Shankar and his wife Kesh Kumari created fraudulent documentation asserting Shankar had died, successfully deceiving the insurance company.
During the investigation, both suspects were brought to the police station where they admitted to the fraudulent activity. According to police authorities, the couple will face court proceedings soon.
The case details reveal that Lucknow police received a written complaint from Sandeep Wadkur explaining that an insurance policy worth Rs 25 lakh had been issued to policyholder Ravi Shankar at Aviva India in December 2012.
On April 21, 2023, Kesh Kumari filed a claim stating her husband had died on April 9 and requested the Rs 25 lakh death benefit. Based on the documentation she provided, the insurance company approved the claim and transferred the full amount to her account on April 21.
However, the insurance company's subsequent internal investigation discovered that Shankar was actually alive, prompting them to register a formal case against the couple.
Police officials noted that both Shankar and Kumari had repeatedly attempted to evade arrest. They were finally apprehended and brought to the police station on Monday, where questioning led to their confession.
