Patna:
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared on Tuesday that the National Democratic Alliance's victory in Bihar assembly elections would "eliminate all symbols of slavery," announcing plans to rename Mohiuddinnagar, a block in Samastipur district, as "Mohan Nagar."
During his intensive campaign tour on the final day before the first phase of polling, the BJP leader addressed a rally in Mohiuddinnagar constituency, making this significant announcement.
"I encourage all brothers and sisters to support renaming Mohiuddinnagar as Mohan Nagar. It is entirely feasible. We must abandon all reminders of colonial subjugation. We implemented similar changes in Uttar Pradesh, where Faizabad became Ayodhya and Allahabad was renamed Prayagraj," stated Adityanath.
"When determined leaders assume office, they act according to their principles, whether creating employment opportunities for youth or safeguarding cultural heritage," asserted Yogi, who also serves as head priest of the Gorakshdham shrine in Gorakhpur.
The BJP has nominated incumbent MLA Rajesh Kumar Singh for the Mohiuddinnagar constituency, where his main opponent is RJD's Ejya Yadav, who won the seat in 2015 but failed to maintain it in the subsequent election.
Bihar BJP leaders have been advocating for some time that locations with names rooted in Indo-Islamic cultural fusion should be renamed.
However, this approach has met with disapproval from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, president of the JD(U), who expressed strong opposition when BJP leaders suggested several months ago that Bakhtiyarpur, his birthplace near Patna, should be renamed "Nitish Nagar."
