Kolkata:
A tragic incident occurred in West Bengal's Howrah district when a 30-year-old man reportedly took his own life on Tuesday. According to police, Jahir Mal was found deceased at his residence in Khalisani, Uluberia area, having allegedly died by suicide due to distress over errors in his identification documents during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Family members informed authorities that Mal had been experiencing significant anxiety after discovering a spelling mistake in one of his official documents. Despite multiple visits to relevant local offices over several weeks in attempts to rectify the error, his efforts proved unsuccessful.
A police officer investigating the case stated, "Jahir feared that the error could lead to complications in verifying his citizenship or voter eligibility during the SIR process."
Following the incident, Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee instructed minister Pulak Roy to visit the grieving family. Roy subsequently met with Mal's relatives and promised support during this difficult time.
Banerjee has alleged that seven individuals in West Bengal have died within a week due to fears that their names might be excluded from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision process.
