3 Killed, 4 Missing After Avalanche In Nepal

A devastating avalanche struck Nepal's Yalung Ri peak on Monday, resulting in the tragic death of three people, including a French climber and two Nepali guides.

The avalanche swept through the base camp of the 5,630-metre-tall peak located in the Rolwaling Valley of Dolakha district in Bagmati province, leaving four additional climbers missing and five others injured.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato, the avalanche occurred around 10:00 am during an expedition. The climbing team consisted of 12 individuals: five foreign climbers and seven Nepali guides.

Among the missing are nationals from Canada, Germany, and Italy. Initial reports from local media had suggested a higher death toll of seven, but officials have confirmed three fatalities thus far.

The five injured Nepalese climbers were successfully rescued from the incident site. Rescue operations continued throughout Monday evening but were hampered by challenging weather conditions.

A search operation was jointly conducted by the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police with helicopter assistance. DSP Mahato confirmed that search efforts will resume on Tuesday to locate the missing climbers.

The Yalung Ri peak, situated in northeastern Nepal, is a popular destination for mountaineering expeditions but presents significant risks including avalanches, especially during certain weather conditions.
