Bhubaneswar:

On Sunday, law enforcement in Odisha's Malkangiri district made a major breakthrough by dismantling a criminal network engaged in the illegal trafficking of Hashish oil, according to a senior police official.

During a media briefing, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinodh Patil confirmed the seizure of 60 kg of Hashish oil.

He stated that the seized contraband would be valued at nearly Rs 8 crore in the market.

Meanwhile, eight suspects involved in the operation managed to flee the scene, abandoning eight motorcycles, which were subsequently confiscated by authorities.

The Malkangiri SP further noted that operations are ongoing to apprehend the eight drug traffickers who escaped.

According to police sources, a patrol team from Chitrakonda police station received intelligence at approximately 11 a.m. on Sunday about eight individuals gathered near the Sal tree jungle at ESSAR Chowk with eight motorcycles. The suspects were allegedly waiting to deliver liquid cannabis or hashish to a buyer from neighboring Andhra Pradesh.

Following this tip-off, the patrol unit immediately proceeded to the location to investigate the information.

"Upon noticing the police vehicle and uniformed personnel, the eight individuals fled the scene, abandoning their motorcycles and a plastic sack containing suspicious contraband materials. The patrol team pursued the suspects and attempted to capture them, but they managed to escape by taking advantage of the thick jungle," stated the Malkangiri police in an official press release.

SP Patil informed the media that this hashish oil seizure marks the first such case in Malkangiri district and across Odisha.

He also mentioned that according to information provided by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the highest number of hashish oil seizures have occurred in states such as Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

He emphasized that this is not only the first such case in Odisha but also represents the largest single seizure of hashish oil in the country.
