RBI Data Shows Rs 5,817 Crore Worth of Rs 2,000 Notes Still in Circulation: 98.37% Already Returned

The Reserve Bank of India regularly updates the public on the withdrawal status of Rs 2,000 banknotes.
Mumbai:
According to data released by the Reserve Bank on Saturday, Rs 2,000 denomination notes worth Rs 5,817 crore remain in circulation.
On May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation, though these notes continue to maintain their status as legal tender.
In an official statement, the central bank revealed that the total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation has dramatically decreased from Rs 3.56 lakh crore (as recorded on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal was announced) to Rs 5,817 crore at the close of business on October 31, 2025.
The statement further noted, "Thus, 98.37 percent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned."
Since the announcement date, the facility for exchanging Rs 2,000 banknotes has been available at all 19 issue offices of the RBI.
Beginning October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices have also been accepting Rs 2,000 banknotes from individuals and entities for direct deposit into their bank accounts.
Additionally, the public can send Rs 2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country to any RBI issue office for credit to their bank accounts.
These issue offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
The RBI continues to periodically publish updates on the status of the withdrawal process for Rs 2,000 banknotes.
