Bhubaneswar:
A 25-year-old traffic constable from Odisha's Bhubaneswar has been discovered deceased after going missing earlier this month. Authorities recovered her remains from a forested area in Keonjhar district. Police have taken her husband, also employed as a police constable, into custody after he reportedly admitted to committing the murder.
Subhamitra Sahoo, a native of Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district who served in Bhubaneswar, departed for her shift on September 6 and never returned, according to police reports.
Her mother filed a missing person report the following day, prompting authorities to launch a search operation.
During their investigation, detectives discovered that Sahoo had entered into a clandestine marriage with Deepak Rout in July 2024, as revealed by Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh during a press briefing. Investigators determined that Sahoo was last seen with Rout in Bhubaneswar, making him the primary person of interest in the case.
Upon questioning, Rout confessed that he had collected Sahoo from her workplace after 2 pm on September 6 in his vehicle. He subsequently strangled her, according to Mr. Singh. Afterward, Rout buried her body in a jungle in the Ghatagaon area of Keonjhar district, approximately 170 km from Bhubaneswar.
According to the police commissioner, Rout likely killed Sahoo due to financial disagreements. He had allegedly borrowed Rs 10 lakh from Sahoo, who had been requesting repayment to arrange a social ceremony to formally announce their marriage.
Apparently, Rout was reluctant to return the money and had even made threats against her, the commissioner added. "Initially, we couldn't find any evidence or identify her husband as a suspect. We also conducted searches at various pilgrimage sites because her messages indicated she wanted to hide somewhere," the officer explained.
"A comprehensive investigation will be conducted to determine if additional individuals were involved," Mr. Singh stated.
