Numerous tourists found themselves stranded at the border between Assam and Meghalaya near Guwahati following a decision by Assam taxi operators to prohibit vehicles from Meghalaya from entering their state.
Operating under the banner of Motor Parivan Sewakarmi Sanmilita Mancha, Assam, the taxi operators initiated a strike today in response to restrictions imposed by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association. The Meghalaya association had previously limited tourist vehicles from Assam and other states from entering Meghalayan territory. In retaliation, the Assam association implemented similar restrictions against vehicles coming from Meghalaya.
At key border checkpoints including Jorabat and Khanapara, Assam cab operators blocked all vehicles attempting to enter from Meghalaya, not exempting even convoys carrying Members of Legislative Assembly.
Industry sources indicate that approximately 90% of Meghalaya's tourist traffic arrives via Guwahati due to its superior air, rail, and road connectivity. Many tourists typically hire vehicles in Assam for their journeys into Meghalaya.
Reports suggest that around 50,000 vehicles registered in Assam are involved in transporting tourists to Meghalaya and other northeastern states.
