"Reaffirmed Steadfast Support": PM Modi On Talks With Nepal Interim PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a conversation with Nepal's newly-appointed interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday, expressing India's continued support for Nepal's efforts to restore stability following the recent Gen Z-led protests in the neighboring nation.
"Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India's steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability," PM Modi stated, referring to the widespread demonstrations that resulted in former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli's resignation earlier this month.
"Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow," he further added.
Ms Karki assumed the role of interim prime minister last Friday, three days after Mr Oli stepped down amid the most severe unrest Nepal has experienced in decades.
The appointment of Ms Karki to lead the interim administration followed discussions between President Ramchandra Paudel, Nepal's military leadership, and youth protesters who had been at the forefront of the anti-government movement.
The "Gen Z" protests, initially triggered by a government ban on social media platforms, evolved into a broader campaign reflecting increasing public dissatisfaction with the Oli government and Nepal's political establishment over allegations of corruption and disregard for ordinary citizens.
Despite the lifting of the social media ban on September 8, protest intensity increased the following day, with demonstrators shifting their focus toward alleged corruption and the lavish lifestyles of the country's political elite.
In his resignation letter submitted to President Paudel, Mr Oli referenced the "extraordinary circumstances" facing Nepal and stated he was stepping down to facilitate a "constitutional and political" resolution to the ongoing crisis.
The newly formed government is tasked with organizing fresh elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
