The Meghalaya Trinamool Congress experienced a significant setback as Zenith M Sangma, the state unit's vice president and brother of former chief minister Mukul Sangma, officially rejoined the Indian National Congress on Wednesday.
The Sangma siblings had previously left the Congress party along with several MLAs in 2021 to join the Trinamool Congress. This latest development comes strategically ahead of next year's autonomous district council elections and amid growing concerns about the Trinamool's organizational sustainability in Meghalaya.
When announcing his resignation on Tuesday, Zenith Sangma emphasized that it was a challenging decision that required considerable deliberation.
"This was not an easy choice to make. My time with the Trinamool Congress has provided me with valuable experiences, insights, and memories. I will forever be thankful for the confidence, backing, and camaraderie I received from colleagues, workers, and supporters throughout my association with the party," he stated.
"Each life phase serves its own time and purpose. I now believe it's the appropriate moment for me to progress and begin a fresh chapter - one that better aligns with my personal vision and the aspirations I hold for the constituents I represent," he further remarked.
When questioned about whether his elder brother Mukul Sangma might follow the same path and return to Congress, Zenith described Mukul as a "distinguished leader possessing wisdom, knowledge, and extensive experience," adding that his brother's political decisions would be "known best to him."
