The annual report on Registration of Births and Deaths in Delhi for 2024 was published by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics in collaboration with the Office of Chief Registrar (Births & Deaths) of the Delhi government.
The birth rate in Delhi decreased to 14 per thousand population in 2024, compared to 14.66 in 2023. Meanwhile, the death rate increased from 6.16 per thousand population in 2023 to 6.37 in 2024, as indicated in the recently released report.
On a positive note, both infant and maternal mortality rates showed slight improvements in 2024. The infant mortality rate per thousand live births decreased to 22.40 in 2024 from 23.61 in 2023.
The maternal mortality rate also saw a marginal improvement, dropping to 0.44 per thousand live births in 2024 from 0.45 in 2023.
Delhi registered an average of 837 births daily in 2024, with a total of 3,06,459 births recorded throughout the year. This represents a decline from the 3,15,087 births registered in 2023, according to the report.
Of the total births registered in 2024, males accounted for 1,59,549 (52.06 percent), females for 1,46,832 (47.91 percent), and 'others', including transgender or cases of ambiguous gender, for 78 (0.03 percent).
The report further revealed that out of 2,94,464 institutional births, 1,91,727 (65.11 percent) occurred in government hospitals.

In India, the sex ratio is expressed as the number of female births per thousand male births for a specific period.
According to international practice, the sex ratio is calculated as the number of male births per 100 female births. A sex ratio of approximately 105 males per 100 females is considered within an acceptable range, the report stated.
