The deadline for filing Income Tax returns has been extended by a day to Tuesday, the Centre announced late on Monday night.

Following technical issues with the tax portal, the Centre has extended the Income Tax filing deadline.
The Income Tax return filing deadline has been extended by one day to Tuesday, as announced by the Centre late Monday night.
This extension was granted after numerous taxpayers reported technical difficulties with the Income Tax department's online portal.
"The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, initially scheduled for 31st July 2025, was previously extended to 15th September 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has now decided to further extend the deadline for these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025," the Income Tax department announced on their X platform at 11.48 pm.

The department noted that the e-filing portal would undergo maintenance from midnight until 2:30 am on Tuesday to implement necessary utility changes.
Shortly after the first announcement, a follow-up post revealed that over 7.3 crore Income Tax returns had been submitted by Monday, setting a new record.
"A record 7.3 crore+ ITRs have been filed till 15th Sept 2025, exceeding last year's 7.28 crore. We sincerely thank taxpayers & professionals for their timely compliance. To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025)," stated the post.
Earlier Monday evening, responding to user complaints, the department shared guidance on addressing browser-related issues.
"Having difficulty accessing the Income Tax e-Filing Portal? Sometimes, access difficulties with the Income Tax e-Filing Portal may arise due to local system/browser settings. These simple steps often help resolve such issues," they advised in an X post.

Despite following the recommended troubleshooting steps, many taxpayers reported that they continued to experience technical problems with the portal.
