NHAI Implements Comprehensive SOP to Combat Air Pollution on Delhi-NCR Highway Projects

The National Highways Authority of India has introduced a detailed Standard Operating Procedure for Delhi-NCR field offices to mitigate air pollution from highway construction and maintenance activities. The comprehensive framework includes mechanized road sweeping, Miyawaki plantation methods, construction site dust control measures, and regular air quality monitoring to create cleaner environments for highway users and surrounding communities.

Highways Authority Doubles Down On Curbing Pollution On Delhi-NCR Stretches

New Delhi:

The NHAI on Wednesday announced implementation of a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for its Delhi-NCR field offices, aiming to create cleaner environments for National Highway users and surrounding communities by reducing air pollution from highway construction and related activities.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, these guidelines establish a methodical approach to combat air pollution generated from vehicular emissions, road dust, and construction operations. The procedures apply to all completed and ongoing highway projects within Delhi-NCR under NHAI jurisdiction.

The ministry's statement detailed that this extensive SOP provides a thorough framework addressing various areas, including 'Mitigating Pollution on Constructed National Highways' through deployment of mechanized road sweeping equipment, median greening, loop interchange enhancement via regular plantation, and implementation of the 'Miyawaki' forest creation method along highway corridors.

Regulations also mandate the use of tarpaulin sheets for covering construction materials during transport, conducting regular inspections, and maintaining pothole-free roads to minimize additional dust generation.

The guidelines incorporate measures for 'Mitigating Air Pollution at National Highway Construction Sites' to reduce construction-related air pollution through regular anti-smog gun utilization, continuous daily water sprinkling at construction sites, and covering construction materials with green netting to prevent airborne particulate pollution.

Furthermore, the SOP includes requirements for regular monitoring of air quality indices at project locations and adherence to guidelines established by the Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) and Central/State Pollution Control Boards.

The ministry noted that these guidelines also promote utilizing "inert materials and Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste" to decrease environmental impact and support sustainable construction practices.
