"Assaulted, Abandoned By US Cop Husband": Hyderabad Woman Writes To Centre
The marriage took place in 2022.
A 25-year-old Hyderabad woman has appealed to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for urgent intervention after allegedly suffering mental harassment and physical assault from her husband, a police officer in Chicago.
According to the woman, she finds herself in a "state of distress and humiliation" after being stranded in India when her husband allegedly confiscated her legal documents before departing for the US.
While Mr. Uddin or his legal representative have not yet responded to these allegations, reports indicate he claims the couple separated by mutual agreement and divorce proceedings are currently ongoing in the US. Neither Indian nor American authorities have issued statements regarding this matter.
In her August 22 letter to Mr. Jaishankar, Hana Ahmed Khan accused her husband Mohammed Zain Uddin, a US citizen, of subjecting her to persistent "emotional abuse, physical harassment and mental torture" following their marriage on June 22, 2022.
Ms. Khan alleges problems began when Mr. Uddin, who works for the Chicago Police Department, returned to the US shortly after their Hyderabad wedding and refused to bring her with him for almost two years.
She states she finally traveled to the US on February 17, 2024, after Mr. Uddin processed her visa. "Unfortunately, upon my arrival, I was subjected to emotional abuse, physical harassment, and mental torture. Despite these challenges, I remained hopeful that the situation would improve. However, the mistreatment continued," her letter detailed.
In a subsequent press statement, she revealed that after being assaulted by her husband, she called the police. "The cops let him off with a warning," she stated.
She claimed her husband pressured her to initiate divorce proceedings despite her unwillingness.
After receiving her Social Security Card and Green Card, Ms. Khan said Mr. Uddin proposed they travel to India followed by an Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, seemingly as a reconciliation attempt. They stayed at a hotel during their visit.
"He then asked me to visit my family. While I was away, I received a call from the hotel management informing me that my luggage had been removed from the room and that my husband had checked out and left for the airport," her letter stated.
Upon returning to the hotel, she discovered her belongings missing, including her passport, green card, and personal jewelry.
She has requested the External Affairs Minister's assistance in recovering her documents and returning to the US to legally pursue her case against her husband.
"I went to the consulate (in Hyderabad) but did not get much help. I have been struggling for the last four to five months," she told reporters.
In a separate police complaint, Ms. Khan alleged her family spent Rs 20 lakh on the wedding and provided gold and gifts demanded as dowry.
She is seeking the External Affairs Minister's intervention to issue replacement documents that would enable her return to the US to legally address her situation.
