Union Home Minister Amit Shah has designated March 31, 2026, as the deadline to eliminate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) from India, labeling this campaign as the "final phase" of a conflict spanning decades. Evidence from Bastar Range, the heart of the Red Corridor, suggests this period has been among the most violent chapters in Chhattisgarh's history.
Statistical data collected from 2001 through October 27, 2025, reveals the devastating impact of nearly 25 years of conflict, a struggle that has consumed Maoists, security forces, civilians, forests, and any prospect of peace.
The region has experienced 3,404 armed confrontations between security forces and Maoists since Chhattisgarh's formation in 2001. The year 2025 emerged as particularly deadly, with 89 encounters resulting in 224 Maoist fatalities—the highest toll in two decades. During 2024, 217 Maoists were killed across 123 encounters. The year 2006 recorded the maximum number of confrontations at 276, though with relatively fewer Maoist casualties at 60.
Security forces have suffered significant losses, with 1,315 police and paramilitary personnel killed in action within Bastar range between 2001 and 2025. The years 2010 and 2017 proved especially lethal for security forces, with successive IED explosions and ambushes, including the devastating Dantewada and Burkapal incidents, claiming numerous lives. Approximately 171 soldiers died in 2010, while 2017 saw 200 fatalities. Maoist attacks in 2025 resulted in 20 security personnel deaths.
The conflict narrative also includes widespread disillusionment within Maoist ranks. Between 2001 and 2025, 7,826 Maoists surrendered, with the largest exodus occurring in 2025 when 1,319 cadres, including area and zonal commanders, abandoned arms under governmental pressure and rehabilitation incentives. A similar surrender wave occurred in 2016, with approximately 1,208 Maoists laying down weapons.
Security operations have resulted in 13,416 arrests over 25 years—highlighting both the scale and persistent recruitment within Maoist organizations. Peak arrest figures were documented in 2018 (1,136), 2017 (1,016), and 2024 (929), coinciding with intensive counter-insurgency operations following major attacks.
Despite thousands imprisoned, recruitment continued, often drawing young, impoverished, and disaffected individuals from conflict-ravaged villages.
Innocent civilians have paid an enormous price, with 1,817 non-combatants losing their lives in Bastar's conflict zone since 2001. The year 2006 stands as particularly tragic, with approximately 279 civilian deaths, followed by 152 in 2007 and 122 in 2005. Many victims, labeled as "police informers," were publicly executed by Maoist units.
Bastar's forest terrain remains contaminated with lethal hardware. Between 2001 and 2025, approximately 4,312 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other explosives were recovered from Maoist hideouts, with 2025 recording an unprecedented 820 recoveries. During this same period, 3,327 weapon seizure incidents were documented, demonstrating the Maoists' capacity to maintain a well-armed guerrilla force despite persistent security operations.
What began as an ideologically driven insurgency has transformed into a perpetual cycle of violence and retribution. Every shot fired in Bastar's forests reverberates through surrounding villages, where fear, exhaustion, and unfulfilled promises characterize daily existence.
As Home Minister Amit Shah's March 31, 2026, deadline approaches, uncertainty remains whether Bastar will finally experience peace or whether additional casualties will be added to this bloody record: 3,404 encounters, 1,541 Maoist fatalities, 1,315 security personnel killed in action, 1,817 civilian lives lost, 7,826 surrenders, 13,416 arrests, and 4,312 explosive seizures.
Bastar continues its grim accounting. The jungle continues to burn.
