Latur:
Police in Maharashtra's Latur district have arrested a man accused of killing his 70-year-old father during a heated dispute over funds for competitive exam fees.
The fatal incident took place in Hinpallner village on Tuesday, authorities confirmed.
The deceased's family earned their livelihood through vegetable sales and daily wage labor.
According to officials from Chakur police station, the accused, Ajay Panchal, had completed his 12th-grade education and was preparing for police recruitment examinations. He had repeatedly requested money from his father to cover examination fees.
On Monday evening, heavy rainfall had soaked the family's firewood supply, rendering it unusable for cooking. Consequently, Devidas Kashiram Panchal's wife purchased a gas cylinder to address their immediate household needs.
Upon discovering this purchase, Ajay confronted his parents, questioning why they could afford a gas cylinder but not his examination fees.
His mother attempted to calm him down, promising to arrange the money by the following morning, but Ajay insisted on receiving it immediately, police said.
Early Tuesday morning, frustrated by his inability to obtain the funds, the accused engaged in a heated argument with his father.
In a moment of rage, Ajay allegedly attacked his father, striking him on the head with a wooden stick. The elderly man died instantly at the scene, according to officials.
Neighbors rushed to the home after hearing the commotion.
Following a complaint filed by the victim's wife, police registered a murder case against Ajay and took him into custody, the official confirmed.
