A Guwahati court has extended judicial custody for the five primary accused in singer-composer Zubeen Garg's death investigation by 14 additional days.
The accused individuals appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Guwahati through video conferencing from their confinement in Baksa district jail.
Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya, who served as Garg's personal security officers, have not yet submitted bail applications.
Previously, on October 15, the court had ordered judicial custody for these individuals, who were subsequently housed in Baksa jail. Their transfer to this facility occurred under heightened security measures following violent public demonstrations in the area.
Two additional arrests in the case involved Garg's band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta. These individuals were remanded to judicial custody on October 16 and transferred to Haflong prison located in Dima Hasao district.
Zubeen Garg drowned while swimming during a yacht event in Singapore on September 19. Investigators have collected statements from nine of the 11 individuals who accompanied the singer abroad, with another expected to arrive in Guwahati soon for questioning.
Siddharth Sharma, the singer's manager, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, who organized the Singapore event, face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The arrests followed the discovery of suspicious financial transactions exceeding Rs 1.1 crore in the personal security officers' accounts, which investigators suspect may be connected to the case.
The Special Investigation Team continues gathering financial evidence and circumstantial information as the investigation proceeds.
