New Delhi:
Starting November 1, all commercial goods vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not comply with BS-VI emission standards will be barred from entering the national capital, following directives from the Commission for Air Quality Management.
BS-VI compliant vehicles adhere to more stringent emission regulations, helping to reduce pollution levels in the city.
According to a public notice from the transport department, BS-IV commercial goods vehicles will still be allowed entry to Delhi until October 31, 2026, as part of transitional arrangements.
The restrictions will not apply to commercial goods vehicles registered within Delhi, BS-VI compliant diesel vehicles, BS-IV diesel vehicles (until October 31, 2026), or those powered by CNG, LNG, or electricity.
The notice clarified that limitations under various stages of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on commercial goods vehicles will remain applicable during periods when particular stages are enacted.
During an October 17 meeting, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) endorsed a comprehensive ban on polluting commercial vehicles entering Delhi from November 1, in response to the city's deteriorating air quality situation.
Transportation industry representatives had hoped the government might provide an extension for BS-IV compliant vehicles entering Delhi.
Bhim Wadhawa from the All India Motor Transport Congress acknowledged the one-year grace period during which BS-IV compliant vehicles will maintain entry permissions.
Rajendra Kapoor of the All India Motor and Goods Transport Association stated they would convene to discuss their next steps.
"The Supreme Court had issued these orders. If we wish to prevent restrictions on BS-IV compliant vehicles after the one-year period expires, we must petition the court. We will organize a meeting next week to determine our course of action," he further commented.
