Raghuraj Singh was viciously attacked in broad daylight in Delhi's Sarita Vihar neighborhood after opposing unauthorized construction.
New Delhi:
An elderly resident's stand against illegal construction led to a violent assault on the streets of Delhi's Sarita Vihar. Disturbing footage captured on Friday shows a man attacking Raghuraj Singh with a metal rod in full public view. Police have apprehended the perpetrator, Mohit Kumar, thwarting his attempt to escape the city.
According to Singh's statement, he was driving toward Lajpat Nagar when two motorcycle-riding men cut him off. Mohit dismounted and immediately shattered Singh's car window using a rod. When Singh exited his vehicle, Mohit began assaulting him with the weapon.
The recorded incident shows Mohit repeatedly striking Singh, who falls to the ground during the attack. Onlookers can be heard attempting unsuccessfully to intervene. When a female bystander tries to approach the victim, an enraged Mohit threatens her with the same weapon. Singh appears bleeding near his elbow while the attacker continues his assault. Following the incident, both Mohit and his accomplice fled the scene on their motorcycle, according to Singh's complaint.
After Singh filed his report, police registered an FIR and began searching for Mohit. Delhi Police Crime Branch investigators received intelligence that Mohit planned to board a bus from Anand Vihar terminal to escape to Meerut. They also learned that Mohit had shaved his beard to avoid recognition. Police teams arrived at the bus station just in time to apprehend him.
During interrogation, Mohit revealed he works as a second-hand laptop dealer at Nehru Place, Delhi's largest computer parts marketplace. Police discovered he had previously faced assault charges. When questioned about his motive, Mohit admitted attacking Singh because the elderly man had reported unauthorized construction at his building to municipal authorities and police, resulting in a demolition order. This action had infuriated Mohit, prompting the violent attack.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Aditya Gautam credited coordinated and swift police action for Mohit's arrest. "We managed to catch the accused before he could escape. This will ensure the victim gets justice."
