The devastating bus fire occurred when the vehicle ran over a motorcycle involved in an accident.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has declared drunk drivers as "terrorists" following the tragic incident in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool where 20 people lost their lives in a bus fire. He vowed that authorities would show "no mercy" to individuals caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
"Drunk drivers are terrorists. Period. Their actions amount to acts of terror on our roads," Sajjanar stated emphatically on social media platform X. "The horrific Kurnool bus accident that claimed 20 innocent lives wasn't merely an accident but a preventable massacre caused by an intoxicated biker's reckless behavior."
The commissioner elaborated that the incident "was not a road mishap but a criminal act of negligence that annihilated entire families within seconds." Investigation revealed that the motorcycle rider, identified as B Shiva Shankar, was under alcohol influence when the accident occurred. CCTV evidence shows him refueling his motorcycle at 2:24 a.m., shortly before losing control at 2:39 a.m., resulting in the catastrophic collision.
Sajjanar firmly reiterated, "I stand by my statement that DRUNK DRIVERS ARE TERRORISTS in every sense. They destroy lives, families, and futures. Such acts will never be tolerated."
Emphasizing Hyderabad police's zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving, the senior officer declared that every individual caught driving under influence would "face the full force of law" with "no leniency, no exceptions, and no mercy." He called for society to stop categorizing drunk driving as merely a mistake, insisting it's a crime deserving appropriate punishment.
The investigation into the Kurnool tragedy revealed further details about the incident. Shiva Shankar and his companion Erri Swamy were returning after consuming food and alcohol at a dhaba. Erri, who was riding pillion, admitted both had been drinking. Shiva lost control of the motorcycle, collided with a divider, and died instantly. The subsequent bus collision with the motorcycle caused the two-wheeler to be dragged along the road, with its fuel tank igniting the fire that ultimately claimed 19 bus passengers' lives.
