Unarmed Hyderabad Police Deputy Commissioner Fires at Suspect in Self-Defense During Chase

A dramatic incident unfolded in Hyderabad as Deputy Commissioner S Chaitanya Kumar, while pursuing a cell phone theft suspect, was forced to grab his colleague's weapon and fire in self-defense when the suspect attempted to stab him. The injured suspect was immediately hospitalized as authorities continue their investigation into the shooting at Victoria playground.

A police officer shot a man during a pursuit at Victoria playground in Hyderabad on Saturday.

According to initial reports, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East Zone), S Chaitanya Kumar, and his colleague were chasing a man suspected of cell phone theft when the incident took place.

While attempting to apprehend the suspect, the gunman fell, and the suspect allegedly attempted to stab the unarmed DCP. In response, the DCP seized the gunman's weapon and discharged three rounds at the thief.

The wounded suspect was promptly transported to a hospital for medical attention.

DGP Law and Order Mahesh Bhagwat confirmed to NDTV that the officer discharged the firearm.

Information regarding the suspect's condition and the precise details of the shooting incident are currently under investigation.
