Bengaluru Banker Dies After Motorcycle Hits Pothole, Gets Run Over By Truck

The case of Priyanka's death brings renewed attention to the poor condition of Bengaluru roads.

A 26-year-old banker working in Bengaluru died on Friday after she was run over by a truck while traveling on a two-wheeler with her brother near Hoskuru road. Priyanka Kumari Poonia was employed by the UK-based OneSavings Bank Group in the city.

Priyanka was riding pillion while her brother Naresh Kumar Poonia was operating the motorcycle.

How Did The Accident Happen?

In conversation with NDTV, Naresh explained that he had to suddenly brake his motorcycle when a car ahead slowed down due to a pothole on the road.

"I used to drop my sister at the Madavara Metro Station every day. I'm not sure what happened yesterday. A car in front of us stopped because of a road pothole. I had to apply brakes and couldn't decide what to do next. My sister Priyanka died on the spot," Naresh recounted.

He described how the accident occurred when his motorcycle's handle collided with an oncoming truck from the opposite direction.

The impact threw Naresh to the left while Priyanka fell to the right side of the road.

Tragically, as the truck moved forward, it ran over Priyanka's head, causing her immediate death. Naresh suffered injuries to his hands and legs in the incident.

A Spotlight On Bengaluru's Road Conditions

This tragic incident renews focus on the deteriorating road conditions in Bengaluru, where potholes are common across numerous streets.

Naresh informed NDTV that the road where the fatal accident occurred has remained in poor condition for more than seven months.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
