A chlorine gas leak at a joint water distribution facility serving Bhiwandi, Thane and Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporations in Bhiwandi city resulted in five employees being affected, according to an official statement released Wednesday.
Following medical treatment, three employees were discharged, while two remain hospitalized for respiratory complications. However, their condition is reported to be stable, the official confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am on Tuesday at the STEM Water Distribution plant in the Temghar area, as reported by the fire department official.
Representatives from Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation, fire brigade personnel, emergency responders, security officers, and authorities from Shantinagar police station immediately responded to the scene. The affected employees were promptly transported to a nearby private hospital for treatment.
The gas leak also impacted some local residents, prompting an immediate evacuation order for the surrounding area. Fire department personnel swiftly contained the leak, preventing a potential disaster, the official stated.
Sandeep Patnavar, Executive Engineer of the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation Water Supply Department, assured that the situation has been completely stabilized. Nevertheless, a special inspection is being conducted throughout the plant premises as a precautionary security measure.
