Tragic Death of 2-Year-Old Girl Who Drowned in Rainwater Near Chennai Home During Heavy Monsoon

A tragic incident occurred during the heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu when a two-year-old girl named Pranikashree drowned in accumulated rainwater on an open plot adjacent to her home on the outskirts of Chennai.

The incident took place in Mangadu on Wednesday evening while the toddler was playing outside her residence. Authorities believe she accidentally slipped and fell into the waterlogged plot behind her home. According to police reports, the child became entangled in nearby vegetation and was unable to escape.

Her parents, Sandeep Kumar, who works at a lift company, and Priyadarshini, employed at a software firm, discovered their daughter was missing around 6:30 pm after they awoke from a nap. After searching throughout the neighborhood, they made the heartbreaking discovery of their child's hand visible in the flooded plot. They immediately rushed Pranikashree to the government hospital in Poonamallee, but doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.

A senior police official informed NDTV, "We don't suspect any foul play. Preliminary investigation suggests it was an accident while the child was playing near the house."

The Mangadu police have documented the case as accidental drowning and have sent the body for post mortem examination.

This unfortunate incident marks the third rain-related fatality in Tamil Nadu this week as the northeast monsoon intensifies across the region. Earlier on Tuesday, two women lost their lives in Cuddalore district when heavy rains caused a neighboring structure to collapse onto their hut.
