Guwahati:
Opposition groups in Assam have announced plans to file a police complaint against the BJP regarding a controversial artificial intelligence-generated video shared across social media platforms.
The contentious video, published on the Assam BJP's official X account (@BJP4Assam), implied an imminent "Muslim takeover" of the state. This post triggered widespread condemnation from various political leaders, with Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi accusing the BJP of attempting to create a "Muslim-free India."
Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Congress chief and deputy opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, strongly denounced the video, stating that it distorts the true nature of Assamese society and its cultural traditions.
"The BJP IT cell's productions lack the power to even scratch the surface of Assamese society," he stated on X.
"Assam has been shaped by great figures like Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, Azan Pir, Swargadeo Siukapha, Lachit Borphukan and Bhupen Hazarika. Those involved in smuggling cattle, coal, betel leaves or drugs cannot dictate to the Assamese consciousness. The proud and distinguished state of Assam deserves leaders who elevate its people," he further remarked.
Mr. Gogoi confirmed that the Congress party would submit a formal police complaint in Guwahati.
In a subsequent post, he articulated his party's aspirations for the state: "We envision creating a society of pilots, engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, bankers and business owners. We aspire to see an Assam where hard work prevails over hatred, where decency matters more than arrogance, where democracy triumphs over autocracy, and where everyone receives respectful treatment."
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), another significant opposition party, also expressed criticism of the BJP's video.
"The Assam BJP aims to generate fear through this AI video," said Aminul Islam, MLA and general secretary of the AIUDF.
"They want to convince the majority community that without BJP in power, a complete Muslim takeover will occur. They've promoted such narratives previously - sometimes via alleged 'love jihad' or 'intellectual jihad.' They're attempting to vilify Muslims. This video constitutes hate speech. It warrants a suo motu case, and we intend to approach the Election Commission," he added.
In response to the criticism, Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami defended the video. In his statement to NDTV, he said: "The Assam BJP believes the video portrays the truth about how demographic changes in the state have threatened the lives, livelihoods, land and culture of indigenous communities."
This controversy emerges during a politically sensitive period in Assam, as opposition parties intensify their criticism of the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
