Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti has announced her intention to contest the 2029 Lok Sabha elections from Jhansi. During a media interaction, she stated, "If I contest, I will choose Jhansi as my constituency. My desire is to participate in the Lok Sabha elections. Should the party request me to run, I will not decline."
Bharti emphasized, "I am not sidelined in politics. I am working with complete dedication for cow conservation and the Ganga river. Beyond these causes, I have no personal political ambitions."
After her comments generated media attention, Bharti clarified on X that her statement was made during an informal conversation at Lalitpur railway station. "On October 18, 2025, while catching a train from Tikamgarh to Lalitpur, I met BJP officials and workers from Lalitpur and Jhansi. I casually mentioned my interest in contesting the 2029 elections from Jhansi," she explained.
She confirmed standing by her statement but added two crucial conditions: the BJP must officially request her candidacy, and current Jhansi MP Anurag Sharma should not face any disadvantages due to her decision.
Bharti revealed plans to launch a cow conservation campaign on October 29, coinciding with Gopashtami. This initiative will span one and a half years, engaging Gram Panchayats and farmers. "Cows can only thrive if farmers want them. Every Ladli Behen should receive two cows, as women can provide sincere care," she suggested.
The former chief minister recommended that cow shelters should only house ill or unfit cattle, while healthy ones should be raised by farmers. She proposed that farmers maintaining cows should receive monthly financial assistance of Rs 10,000, along with land support.
Bharti disclosed that funding from Arab countries is being arranged to support cow shelters, and she has already discussed improving cow welfare with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Additionally, Bharti announced a Ganga Cleaning Campaign beginning November 4 in Prayagraj, with prominent figures from across India participating. "Cows and the Ganga are fundamental to a self-reliant India," she stated. "Natural farming must be promoted to prevent chemicals from agricultural lands flowing into the Ganga."
Responding to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's comments about Lord Krishna's name interpretation, Uma Bharti advised caution: "Politicians should not claim expertise in scriptures. Such matters should be addressed by saints." She characterized the Chief Minister's statement as "innocent and emotional."
She also urged the government to remove cattle from roadways for safety reasons. "We should implement the four-lane road concept from England and America with roadside fencing. I will discuss this again with Nitin Gadkari. Highways should be clear of animals," she said.
Regarding the Ladli Behen Yojana, Bharti proposed providing two cows to each beneficiary to enhance women's income and independence. "I've spoken with Minister Lakhan Patel about this; it would help Ladli Behens achieve true self-sufficiency," she concluded.
