Standing modestly in her religious attire with bare feet at the starting line, Kerala nun Sister Sabina astonished spectators when she sprinted forward and cleared hurdles with remarkable ease at an athletics competition.
Sister Sabina, who competed as a national-level hurdler in her teenage years, secured first place in the 55-plus category at the State Masters Athletics meet after many years away from formal competition. The crowd burst into enthusiastic applause and cheers as she crossed the finish line.
Originally from Ennappara in Kasaragod, Sister Sabina relocated to Wayanad in 1993. She initially distinguished herself in athletics while in Class 9, participating in hurdle races at the national level. During her university education, she continued to excel in collegiate competitions. Later, she transitioned to teaching and reduced her competitive participation. Currently, she serves as a physical education instructor at a school.
This race represented her final competition before retirement. "I will be retiring from my position as a physical education teacher next March. I wanted to compete one final time before retiring, which is why I participated in the State Masters meet," she explained.
