2 Maharashtra Teens Die In Accident, Protesters Garland Potholes In Nashik
Two 19-year-olds, Mahendra Fating and Hemant Patil, met with tragic deaths due to Maharashtra's pothole-ridden roads.
The lives of two teenagers, both 19 years old, came to an abrupt and tragic end while returning from work. Hemant Patil from Palghar and Mahendra Fating from Nagpur lost their lives in separate road accidents caused by the poor condition of Maharashtra's roads.
Hemant, who worked at Blue Star Company in Vasuri and supported his family as the sole breadwinner, was traveling on the Wada-Bhiwandi Highway when his scooter collided with a trailer and skidded due to potholes. He died immediately at the scene.
In another incident, Mahendra Fating suffered fatal head injuries after falling into a water-logged pothole along with his motorcycle in Nagpur. Mahendra, reportedly the nephew of former councillor Sarita Ishwar Kaware, also died on the spot. His body has been sent to Mayo Hospital for post-mortem, and police are continuing their investigation.
Local residents allege that despite claims of ongoing development work throughout the city, road conditions remain dangerously poor. They blame administrative negligence for these recurring accidents.
In protest against the deteriorating road conditions, citizens have begun placing garlands around potholes to draw attention to the hazardous situation. The large potholes on roads connecting Nashik to the Trimbakeshwar Temple have proven particularly dangerous for travelers.
The Nationalist Youth Congress also conducted a memorial ceremony near potholes for those who have lost their lives due to these road hazards.
Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MP Supriya Sule shared images of deteriorating roads in Baramati on social media platform X, highlighting how they have "fallen into disrepair."
"There are potholes at many places, while at some spots the asphalt has worn off, exposing the gravel underneath. Notably, the Jejuri-Kolvihire road was constructed just a few days ago," Ms Sule stated in her post.

She further noted, "It is evident that the work on this road was of poor quality, and now travelling on both these roads has become extremely difficult."
