Senior Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat narrowly escaped injury in a highway accident that occurred in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district on Saturday, according to officials.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Raghavendra Mishra informed PTI that the incident took place between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM on National Highway 58 near Kharoli. The accident happened while Rawat's convoy was traveling from Delhi to Dehradun.
The incident occurred when a pedestrian suddenly appeared in front of a police escort vehicle, causing it to brake abruptly. This led to a chain reaction with following vehicles colliding into each other, including the former Chief Minister's car.
Police officers accompanying Rawat quickly extracted him from the damaged vehicle and transferred him to another car, after which the convoy continued its journey toward Dehradun.
Rawat himself confirmed his safety through social media, stating, "मैं ठीक हूँ, चिंता की कोई बात नहीं है, गाड़ी को नुकसान जरूर हुआ है।" (I am fine, there is nothing to worry about, though the vehicle has been damaged.)
While the Congress leader escaped unhurt, a head constable traveling in the escort vehicle sustained minor injuries in the accident, according to SP Mishra.
Local Congress leader Chaudhary Yashpal Singh also confirmed that Rawat was safe, adding that prompt action by the police prevented what could have been a major mishap.
