IndiGo Doubles Wide-Body Fleet Order with 30 Additional Airbus A350-900 Aircraft for Global Expansion

IndiGo has confirmed an order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, doubling its wide-body fleet commitment to 60 planes as part of its international expansion strategy. The aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines and are expected to begin joining the fleet from 2027, complementing the airline's existing long-haul operations with leased Boeing 787 Dreamliners and upcoming A321XLR services to Athens.

IndiGo To Buy 30 More Wide-Body A350-900 Aircraft

IndiGo has officially announced a firm order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, significantly expanding its wide-body fleet for international operations.

The Indian carrier, which currently operates more than 400 aircraft with over 900 already on order, has now doubled its wide-body commitments from 30 to 60 A350-900 planes.

With this latest conversion of purchase rights into firm orders, IndiGo retains options for an additional 40 A350 family aircraft for future expansion.

The airline has simultaneously signed an agreement with Rolls-Royce to power its entire A350 fleet with Trent XWB-84 engines, which provide 84,000 pounds of thrust with industry-leading fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers emphasized that this order reflects the carrier's confidence in Indian aviation's future and strengthens their strategic partnership with Airbus.

"These aircraft will play a pivotal role in enabling IndiGo to expand its reach, connecting India with more destinations across the globe," Elbers stated.

The expansion comes as IndiGo has already begun operating long-haul services using leased Boeing 787 Dreamliners since July, with the first A350-900 expected to join the fleet in 2027.

Airbus highlighted India's position as the world's fastest-growing aviation market, noting increasing demand for international travel driven by economic growth and rising household incomes.

The manufacturer positioned the A350 as "the reference aircraft to unlock the potential of the international market for the Indian carrier," while its A320 Family aircraft continue supporting domestic market expansion.

In a related development, IndiGo also announced plans to commence narrow-body A321XLR operations starting January 2026, with initial routes connecting Delhi and Mumbai to Athens.

This comprehensive fleet strategy demonstrates IndiGo's ambitious growth plans for both short and long-haul international markets as it expands beyond its traditional domestic strength.
