New Delhi:
On October 15, a 13-year-old boy was struck and killed by a speeding Thar SUV near the Indian Oil petrol pump in Delhi's Vasant Kunj North area. The tragic incident occurred while the boy was riding his bicycle to buy samosas, according to his family's statement.
Police reports indicate that the SUV hit the boy from behind with tremendous force, throwing him off his bicycle. The driver immediately fled the scene, abandoning the severely injured child. Local residents rushed the boy to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival.
The victim, a Class 8 student at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, resided with his parents in RK Puram.
Initial investigation has revealed that the Thar was being driven recklessly on the right side of the road when it collided with the boy. According to eyewitnesses, the SUV driver did not stop even momentarily after the impact. DCP South West District Amit Goel informed NDTV, "We have obtained CCTV footage from the area and are working to identify the accused vehicle and its driver."
He further stated, "We have registered a case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Several teams have been deployed to trace the suspect."
Law enforcement has filed a case against the driver and efforts to apprehend the culprit are ongoing to ensure justice for the bereaved family.
The victim's mother expressed her grief, stating that her son might have survived if he had received timely medical attention. "No one took my son to the hospital. The police are saying that they have filed a case, but the accused has not been caught so far," she lamented.
This incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who are demanding stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and speed control measures in the area. Community members report that the road near the Indian Oil petrol pump is frequently used by speeding vehicles, creating constant danger for pedestrians and cyclists.
This tragedy adds to the increasing number of fatal road accidents in India's capital. According to Delhi Traffic Police statistics, rash and negligent driving remains one of the primary causes of fatalities on the city's roads.
