Gurugram:

A woman named Kajal was apprehended by Rajasthan Police in Gurugram on Thursday for allegedly conducting multiple marriages with men before disappearing with their valuables and money. Officials reported that she had been evading capture for a year while hiding in Saraswati Enclave.

Rajasthan Police stated that in May 2024, Bhagat Singh from Uttar Pradesh approached Tarachand Jat, a Sikar resident, with a proposal to arrange marriages between Jat's two sons, Bhanwarlal and Shankarlal, and Singh's daughters, Kajal and Tamanna.

Singh collected Rs 11 lakh from Jat, claiming it was for wedding preparations. On May 21, 2024, Singh arrived at a guest house with his wife Saroj, son Suraj, and both daughters (the prospective brides), and proceeded with the marriages to Tarachand Jat's sons.

After staying with Tarachand's family for two days following the wedding, Singh, his wife, and daughters vanished on the third day, taking jewelry, cash, and clothing with them.

Tarachand subsequently filed a police complaint against the family at Dantaramgarh Police Station in Sikar district. Police arrested Singh and his wife on December 18.

During questioning, the suspects revealed they were operating an organized fraudulent marriage scheme. Police subsequently arrested Tamanna and Suraj as well.

Kajal, however, remained elusive. She spent time in Jaipur and Mathura before relocating to Gurugram, where she lived in rented accommodation before her arrest on Thursday by Sikar Police in coordination with Gurugram Police.

"During interrogation, Kajal disclosed that her father Bhagat Singh had established a sophisticated fraud operation. The two women would pose as unmarried and seek matches with affluent families. Kajal and Tamanna played essential roles in this 'business' because they gained people's trust through their marriages," police reported.

ASI Puranmal, the investigating officer, stated that the suspects would typically spend two or three days with the groom and his family without consummating the marriage.

"We believe this gang may have defrauded numerous individuals using similar tactics. We are currently searching for additional gang members and investigating their network," Puranmal added.
