The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a series of raids across West Bengal on Thursday targeting individuals and businesses allegedly involved in a sand smuggling operation.
Sources revealed that the probe agency carried out searches at offices located in Kolkata's Bentinck Street area, as well as in Lalgarh and Gopiballavpur in Jhargram district. Additionally, investigators raided the residence of sand trader Manish Bagadia in Asansol, Paschim Bardhaman district.
"These raids are part of our ongoing investigation into illegal sand mining activities. The ED operations commenced early this morning," an official stated. The teams are thoroughly examining business records, financial documentation, and properties connected to the alleged smuggling network.
Bagadia reportedly oversees sand trading operations at numerous ghats across multiple districts in South Bengal. An investigation has been launched against him following allegations of unauthorized financial transactions and money laundering activities, according to sources.
In addition to his residence, the ED teams also searched Bagadia's business establishments in Asansol. Local law enforcement was deployed to maintain security during the operation.
In Lalgarh, officials raided a sand mine owned by businessman Sourav Roy.
This operation follows previous enforcement action on September 8, when the probe agency conducted multiple raids throughout the state in connection with the same case. Those earlier searches were carried out in various locations including Kolkata, Jhargram, Kalyani, and Bidhannagar.
