Mother and Daughter Arrested for Newborn Theft at Bengal Government Hospital: Complete Investigation Details

The police are currently investigating the motives behind the newborn theft by the two women.

Police officials announced on Wednesday that a woman and her daughter have been apprehended for the theft of a newborn infant from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.

Rinki Khatun, also known as Rumki Khatun, and her mother Minira Bibi, were taken into custody on Tuesday evening.

Upon receiving reports of an 18-day-old boy being stolen from the hospital, law enforcement immediately launched an investigation into the incident.

Initial investigations revealed that the theft occurred when the infant's mother, Selefah Khatun, had brought her son to the outdoor children's ward for a medical examination.

Selefah Khatun and her mother were seated with the baby on the maternity ward's veranda. At this point, a woman approached them and asked to hold the child. Suddenly, this woman took the infant and quickly fled the scene.

The child's mother, alarmed by what had happened, immediately raised an alarm.

After news outlets reported the theft, residents in the area where the suspect lived became suspicious about the baby in Rinki Khatun's possession. Several neighbors visited Rinki Khatun's rented accommodation in Uttarpara near the Khagragarh area of East Burdwan district.

A senior Burdwan district police officer stated, "Khatun attempted to deceive the neighbors, but their suspicions only increased. The neighbors subsequently alerted the police about the situation."

"After receiving this information, officers from Burdwan police station went to Khagragarh and recovered the infant. Both women were arrested on charges related to child theft," the officer explained.

Police officials stated they are continuing to investigate the motivations behind the women's actions.

Following the arrest of the accused, the infant was admitted to the maternity ward of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. The family expressed joy upon being reunited with their child.
