IPS officer Y Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself dead on October 7.
Chandigarh:
The Haryana government has sent State DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave following the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar and amid mounting pressure from opposition parties and Kumar's family, who are demanding action against officers accused of harassment.
This significant development occurred shortly after the state government had transferred Narendra Bijarniya, who was serving as Rohtak's Superintendent of Police at the time.
Rajiv Jaitly, media adviser to the Haryana chief minister, confirmed: "Yes, the DGP has been sent on leave by the government."
In an eight-page "final note" reportedly written by Kumar before his death, he accused eight senior IPS officers, including Kapur and Bijarniya, of "blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities."
Amneet P Kumar, the deceased officer's wife and a senior IAS officer herself, has demanded that Kapur and Bijarniya be named in the FIR for allegedly abetting her husband's suicide.
The family has refused to consent to a post-mortem examination or cremation until their demands, including the arrest of the accused officers, are addressed.
Kumar, a 52-year-old officer from the 2001 IPS batch, reportedly took his own life with a firearm on October 7.
Following the registration of an FIR, Chandigarh Police has formed a six-member special investigation team to probe the case.
In recent days, numerous political leaders have visited Kumar's family to offer condolences, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi scheduled to meet them on Tuesday.
Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, who met with the family on Monday, stated that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has assured that action will be taken against those found guilty in this case.
Opposition parties have intensified their criticism of the government over this matter and are demanding prompt action.
Several prominent opposition figures visited the Kumar residence in Sector 24 on Monday, including Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Congress MP from Rohtak Deepender Singh Hooda, INLD chief Abhay Singh Chautala, and Punjab Finance Minister and AAP leader Harpal Singh Cheema.
Vikramarka, who traveled from the southern state to console Kumar's family, described the alleged suicide as "extremely sad" and called for immediate government action against the officers named in Kumar's "final note."
"Y Puran Kumar gave up his life and in his dying declaration, he mentioned particularly about two officers, Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and the then Rohtak SP Narendra (Bijarniya), stating that they have humiliated him, insulted him, and they are the root cause for his suicide," he stated.
The Congress leader urged the government to act swiftly upon Kumar's "dying declaration" and take appropriate measures against the responsible officers.
Meanwhile, a 31-member committee formed to advocate for "justice" for the deceased officer's family issued a 48-hour ultimatum on Sunday, demanding action against Kapur and Bijarniya.
