A 65-year-old woman, believed to be a Pakistani national involved in drug trafficking activities, has been apprehended in Sabroom, a border town in South Tripura district, after reportedly escaping from a Nepal jail.
According to Sabroom police officer Nityananda Sarkar, the woman identified herself as Louis Nighat Akhtar Bhano. She was initially detained by Government Railway Police at Sabroom railway station before being transferred to the local police station for thorough interrogation.
"We suspect she intended to cross the border into Bangladesh. Security agencies are currently questioning her to obtain more details about her movements and objectives," Sarkar explained.
Initial interrogation suggests that Bhano had recently escaped from imprisonment in Nepal and likely has Pakistani connections, though authorities have not yet confirmed her nationality. Officials continue their questioning to verify her identity and background information.
Reports indicate Bhano is married to Md Golaf Faraj, reportedly from Sheikhupura, Pakistan. She allegedly entered Nepal 12 years ago using a Pakistani passport and subsequently became involved in drug trafficking operations.
Nepalese police arrested Bhano in 2014 for possession of 1 kg of brown sugar, resulting in a 15-year prison sentence. She had been serving this sentence at Kathmandu Jail until her alleged escape during recent widespread unrest in Nepal.
In September 2025, Nepal experienced mass jailbreaks amid violent anti-government demonstrations, leading to approximately 13,000 inmates escaping from facilities across the country. Many were later captured while attempting to flee into India.
Authorities have stated that Bhano will be brought before a local court, where police will request custody to continue their investigation.
