Udaipur has implemented an innovative artificial intelligence-powered traffic signal system at the congested Fatehpura intersection. This pioneering initiative aims to optimize traffic flow, alleviate congestion, and reduce travel time for commuters.

Unlike conventional traffic signals operating on predetermined schedules, this advanced system employs high-resolution cameras and sensors to monitor vehicular movement in real-time. The AI technology analyzes traffic density across all lanes and dynamically adjusts signal timing accordingly. Lanes with minimal traffic receive green signals for only brief periods, allowing busier lanes to move more efficiently.

The system has been integrated with a mobile application, providing traffic authorities with comprehensive monitoring capabilities.

According to Traffic Deputy Superintendent of Police Ashok Anjana, traffic congestion primarily occurs during peak morning and evening hours. The AI system is specifically designed to automatically reduce pressure on overcrowded lanes during these periods. Based on the performance at the Fatehpura intersection, authorities intend to expand the system to additional key junctions throughout the city.

The technology offers enhanced features beyond standard traffic management. Equipped with specialized sound sensors, the AI system can detect sirens from emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines. Upon identifying a siren, the system automatically switches the corresponding signal to green, ensuring emergency responders can navigate intersections without delays.

Additionally, the AI system continuously collects and records traffic patterns throughout the day. This valuable data will provide city officials with insights to further enhance traffic management strategies. If the Fatehpura trial proves successful, similar systems may be implemented at other major intersections across Udaipur.
