The Remarkable Story of Political Honor: When a Bihar Leader Withdrew from Election After His Rival Sought His Blessings

In an era where modern politics is dominated by caste divisions and individualism, with election platforms frequently devolving into accusatory exchanges, historical accounts from previous generations provide refreshing perspectives on political integrity.

One remarkable story emerges from the 1977 Bihar assembly election, featuring a noteworthy contest between Congress leader Lahtan Chaudhary and Janata Party candidate Parmeshwar Kunwar for the Mahishi constituency in Saharsa district.

Though the electoral battle was intensely competitive, an unexpected moment transformed the campaign when Kunwar approached Chaudhary and sought his blessings as a younger brother would from an elder. In response, Chaudhary not only bestowed his blessings but immediately withdrew from the electoral race.

This episode transcends a mere electoral anecdote, embodying the authentic spirit of Indian democratic values where personal relationships and dignity superseded political ambitions. As Bihar prepares for upcoming elections, this narrative continues to serve as a powerful lesson in political ethics.

In 1977, Chaudhary represented Congress from the Mahishi assembly constituency in Saharsa district, directly competing against Janata Party's Kunwar.

Following their nomination filings, both candidates commenced public outreach efforts across the area. During his campaign, Chaudhary visited Ravaneshwar Prasad Singh (also known as Doman Singh), who served as deputy chief of the Navhatta block.

After concluding the meeting, Chaudhary began canvassing door-to-door throughout the village. While approaching a Shiva temple, he noticed Kunwar advancing toward him with supporters and paused his procession.

In a gesture of profound respect, Kunwar bowed down and sought Chaudhary's blessings by touching his feet. Chaudhary reciprocated with blessings for Kunwar's prosperity. Eyewitnesses recall that the two candidates engaged in cordial discussions about election matters despite their opposing platforms.

As Chaudhary prepared to continue his campaign, Kunwar halted him with a question: "Am I a younger brother?"

Chaudhary responded with a smile and, without hesitation, blessed him again with victory before attempting to proceed.

However, Kunwar interrupted once more, asking, "Where are you going now? How can you go campaigning after blessing your younger brother with victory?"

Upon hearing this, Chaudhary smiled acknowledgingly and simply replied, "You're right." He then departed from the area and returned directly to his village, Karnapur.

At the time, Chaudhary held the position of state Congress president. His political career began with winning the Supaul assembly seat in Bihar's first election in 1952. Later, he secured the Saharsa Lok Sabha seat in 1964.

The Mahishi assembly constituency was newly established when Kunwar claimed victory in that election.

Chaudhary subsequently reclaimed the Mahishi seat in 1969 and maintained his position by winning successive elections in 1972, 1980, and 1985.
