Rare Wildlife Spectacle: Mother Tiger Battles Daughter Over Territory in Ranthambore National Park

Witnessing tiger interactions during a jungle safari is an uncommon and extraordinary experience.

Visitors at Ranthambore National Park observed a remarkable wildlife encounter on Tuesday when the renowned tigress Riddhi (T-124) engaged in a territorial dispute with her daughter Meera in Zone 3 of the reserve. Such natural tiger behavior is seldom witnessed during typical safari excursions.

During the morning expedition, the mother and daughter tigers were initially spotted in close proximity. Meera soon challenged her mother Riddhi in an attempt to establish her own territory. This confrontation quickly escalated into a fierce battle. Both tigresses roared powerfully, their vocalizations resonating throughout the jungle. The conflict was brief but intense, with Riddhi ultimately emerging victorious. Meera, accepting defeat, retreated into the forest.

Both Riddhi and Meera sustained injuries during the encounter. Forest authorities confirmed that the confrontation was territorial in nature, representing normal wildlife behavior, particularly as young tigers mature and begin establishing their own domains.

The conflict coincides with Riddhi's three cubs reaching maturity and beginning to carve out their individual territories separate from their mother. Wildlife specialists explain that when a young tiger attempts to claim its own space, the initial challenge typically involves confronting the mother.

According to Ranthambore National Park officials, tigress Riddhi represents the fifth generation descended from the legendary tigress Machali. As daughter of Tigress Arrowhead, she reportedly possesses the same strength and impressive qualities as her great-grandmother.

Riddhi has established her territory within her mother's range and can be observed at Padam Lake, Raj-Bag, Malik Lake, and the Mandoob area in Zones 3 and 4.

This territory is considered Ranthambore's core area, where the lineage of dominant female tigers began with Machali, continuing through her daughter Sundari, then Krishna, Arrowhead, and now Riddhi.

In a previous incident, a male tiger approximately 3.5 years old died following a territorial dispute at Ranthambore National Park in the Ama Ghati forest region. Initial reports indicated that T-2309 perished in a territorial conflict with another tiger, T-120 (Ganesh), who is 6.5 years old.
