A courageous medical professional was captured on video traversing a gorge via zipline to reach patients isolated by devastating landslides in West Bengal. Dr. Irfan Molla, who serves as the Block Medical Officer of Health for Nagrakata, utilized specialized safety equipment and assistance from rescue teams to access Bamandanga village after connecting roads were completely destroyed by natural disasters.
The remarkable footage, which has gained significant traction across social media platforms, documents the doctor's careful journey suspended above the gorge before successfully landing to provide critical medical assistance to injured residents.
Social media users widely shared the video with captions praising his extraordinary dedication: "All heroes don't wear capes. True heroes are those who help people in the darkest of times. When a doctor risks his life and crosses dangerous terrain hanging from a rope just to reach and treat flood-affected people, he truly deserves our salute. A supreme example of humanity."
The devastating natural disasters in northern West Bengal have claimed at least 28 lives, with Darjeeling, Mirik, Sukhiapokhri, and Jorebunglow experiencing the most severe impact. The situation extends beyond India's borders, with neighboring Nepal reporting over 50 fatalities, particularly in the Ilam district.
Government agencies have mobilized emergency response teams, with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units deployed to Alipurduar and other severely affected regions.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally visited disaster zones and characterized the flooding as a "man-made disaster," suggesting that inadequate urban planning and environmental management exacerbated the situation. Her administration has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for families who lost loved ones and special home guard positions for family members of those affected in Nagrakata.
Rescue operations continue with heavy machinery and helicopter support being utilized to locate individuals potentially trapped beneath debris. The region's vital tourism economy has suffered significantly, with hotels and homestays in Darjeeling, Mirik, and the Dooars reporting cancellation rates reaching 70 percent.
