This facility represents the second airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, complementing the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. NMIA received its aerodrome license from the DGCA on September 30.

The development is progressing through multiple phases under Navi Mumbai International Airport, with Adani Group holding a 74 percent stake and the remaining 26 percent owned by Maharashtra government's land development authority CIDCO.
