The gold plating controversy at Sabarimala temple has escalated into a significant political dispute, with the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) denying any wrongdoing while the Pandalam Palace calls for a thorough investigation.
P. S. Prasanth, president of the TDB, firmly stated on Saturday that no lapses occurred during the gold plating work. He explained that the panels sent to Chennai for repairs were not given to Unnikrishnan Potty as claimed, and the 'Thiruvabharanam' was transported under police escort with the Commissioner present.
Prasanth further clarified, "The 2019 order referenced copper panels, and the warranty agreement with Smart Creations was under Unnikrishnan Potty's name, explaining his involvement. We welcome a comprehensive inquiry, though we believe these allegations are politically motivated."
Unnikrishnan Potty defended himself against the accusations, stating that he received copper panels as indicated in the Devaswom's own records. He insisted he had no knowledge of any previous gold plating and never displayed or relocated the panels.
"If I've committed any wrongdoing, I'm prepared to face consequences and fully cooperate with investigation officials," Potty stated.
Devaswom Vigilance authorities reported that Potty has already been questioned twice in Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru, with additional questioning possible if necessary.
Reports suggest the Pinarayi Vijayan government is considering transferring the case to the Crime Branch as evidence collection continues.
The Pandalam Palace released a statement urging the government to act responsibly regarding public concerns. They expressed skepticism about the gold-plating work performed in Chennai and questioned why the coating deteriorated so quickly.
Additionally, the Palace called for verification regarding potentially missing gold sheets donated by liquor magnate Vijay Mallya and highlighted that essential procedural standards established in 2019 were not followed.
According to tradition, Lord Ayyappa, Sabarimala's presiding deity, was adopted by the then King of Pandalam. The royal family is therefore considered the deity's earthly guardians, with their traditions continuing to influence temple ceremonies.
