The Assam Police are conducting an investigation into the death of renowned singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
Guwahati:
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that the Gauhati High Court has accepted the Assam government's request to establish a judicial commission to investigate the death of renowned singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
Justice Soumitra Saikia from the high court will lead this judicial commission.
The Chief Minister has invited the public to meet with the commission and share their perspectives on any unusual aspects surrounding the cultural icon's death that they or his family may have noticed.
Today, Garima Saikia Garg, the wife of Zubeen Garg, provided her statement before a chief judicial magistrate regarding the first information report (FIR) currently being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Sarma revealed that the state government has received the initial autopsy report from Singapore authorities regarding Zubeen Garg's death. He mentioned that this report has been given to Garima Garg, and added that a second autopsy report from Gauhati Medical College is expected to be available soon.
The CID presented Zubeen Garg's arrested band member Sekhar Jyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta before a chief judicial magistrate in Guwahati today, who subsequently placed them in CID custody for 14 days.
Sources indicate that the CID's special investigation team (SIT) is handling the case with considerable urgency. In its first statement since the arrest of four individuals in the case, the state government reported making persistent efforts to have non-resident Indians (NRIs), who were aboard the same yacht as Zubeen Garg in Singapore, participate in the investigation.
"Zubeen Garg was the soul of Assam. Those responsible won't be spared. Our Home Department is working very hard to get the NRIs involved in the Zubeen Garg case. The SIT is working relentlessly. People will hear good news in the investigation very soon," Assam minister Pijush Hazarika told NDTV.
According to SIT sources, they began cross-checking the statements of Zubeen Garg's manager Siddartha Sarma, Sekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprava Mahanta today.
"Two more arrested people have been sent to 14-day custody. We are interrogating them, and trying to establish what exactly happened. We are committed to conducting a detailed investigation and we have fast-tracked the investigation," SIT head and Assam's Special DGP MP Gupta informed reporters.
